General Tim Coffin

General Coffin joined Oliver Investment Banking (OIB) in late 2023 as our Space, Missile Defense, and industry expert to assist with the growth and goal setting for Aerospace and Defense companies.

Tim is a retired United States Army Brigadier General (BG) who brings over three decades of experience working across a broad range of critical defense functions including Strategic Planning, Logistics, International Partnerships, Research and Development, Space Operations, Intelligence, Missile Defense, Satellite Communications, Position Navigation and Timing (PNT), Space Control, Directed Energy Systems, Test and Evaluation, Requirements Development, Training, and Business Capture activities.

A graduate of Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois, General Coffin started his military carrier with the Army Special Forces Detachment Europe.  He commanded at company level at Fort Hood Texas and then was selected to serve in the Army Secretariat in Northern Virginia. He was then assigned to the Joint Staff in the Pentagon as an intern under General Colin Powell.

He attended the Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and was selected to attend the highly selective  School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS) program. Upon graduation from SAMS he became a division planner for the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colorado. 

Following his Division Staff assignment he became the Executive Officer of the 64th Forward Support Battalion. General Coffin served as an Intelligence Watch Commander at the United States Space Command (USSPACECOM), North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and then served as a member of the four star’s Commander’s Action Group.

When General Coffin left USSPACECOM he joined the United States Army Space and Missile Defense Command (USASMDC) staff as the G-4 (Chief Logistics Officer) and then was privileged to be selected to stand up the 1st Space Battalion and become it’s first Commander. After Command, Tim was sent to the Pentagon as a member of the Objective Force Task Force to integrate Space into future generations of Army formations.  While Tim was selected to complete his War College with an independent study at Harvard he instead completed his second Master’s degree at the Army War College in Carlisle PA where he could teach other Army Officers the importance of Space operations. 

Tim served on the Army Staff in the Pentagon as the division chief for Space, Missile Defense and Nuclear operations.  Moving back to Colorado, Tim served as the Director of Combat Developments for Space and Missile Defense Command’s Future Warfare Center and then assumed Command of the 1st Space Brigade leading space units deployed in 11 time zones around the globe.  Moving to Vandenburg Air Force Base in California he served as the J-3 Director of Operations for the Joint Functional Component Commander for Space (JFCC-Space) and then deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as Chief of the U.S. Strategic Command, Forward Integration Team, Kabul. As a General Officer, Tim served as the Deputy Commanding General for Operations at USASMDC, Deputy Commanding General at JFCC-Space and as the 33rd Commanding General at White Sands Missile Range New Mexico.

General Coffin has Master’s degrees in Military Security Policy and Strategy from the Army War College, Advanced Strategic Arts program and a Master’s degree in Military Science, Leadership and Operational Art from the School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS).  He also completed the coursework for a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from Webster University.  Tim is a Fellow from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Seminar XXI program and a Fellow of the Harvard Kennedy School Senior Executive Program.

Coffin’s awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters. He has earned the Joint Staff Identification BadgeArmy Staff Identification BadgeMaster Space Badge, and both the United States and German Parachutist Badges. In November 2013 he was selected as a fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Tim serves on Advisory Boards for the National Security Space Association (NSSA) and the Space Force Association (SFA).  He enjoys time in the mountains skiing and hiking with his wife Kristy but most of his free time is spent renovating their 1925 farmhouse, spending time with his 8 children, 8 grandchildren and caring for 8 head of cattle and 19 chickens.
